Apple announced earlier that it’ll start selling unlocked, contract-free iPhone 4S in November this year but there’re reports that some selected stores in U.S have already started selling unlocked iPhone 4S units.

Apple this time introduced a “World Phone” which can work on both CDMA or GSM based network but keep in mind that your unlocked phone will work only with carriers which have GSM capabilities like AT&T in U.S.

The news that some Apple stores in U.S have started selling iPhone 4S without contract was also confirmed by iPhone developer Steven Troughton-Smith who was able to purchase and verify unlocked phone.

Contract-free, unlocked iPhone 4S comes with AT&T Sim card which can be removed if required. You can buy it at following prices.

  • iPhone 4S 16 GB – $649
  • iPhone 4S 32 GB – $749
  • iPhone 4S 64 Gb – $849

Once you’ve bought it, you can activate it by plugging your device into computer and iTunes will display the message as shown in above screenshot. Troughton-Smith’s was able to successfully connect his unlocked iPhone 4S to T-Mobile’s EDGE network via an O2 SIM-card on roaming.
